Chapter 20
Although James needed another few nights to make up for all the rest heâd missed while drinking himself into a stupor to avoid dealing with his emotions, he was up early thanks to the time difference. It was surprisingly lovely and domestic to wake up with Nikolai sleeping next to him.
Moving slowly so he didnât wake Nikolai, James slid out of bed. He snatched his duffel and went into the enormous bathroom to grab a shower. In a matter of hours, James would be immortally bound to Nikolai.
As he shampooed his hair, James wondered if he could truly process it. He would no longer age, and his days of convincing himself he wasnât lonely were done. Instead, Lord Nikolai Volkov would be at his side, and as James soaped himself up, he grinned. Nikolai was so unexpected in his life, and for the weekend, James would focus on that.
All the issues between the two worlds James now had to straddle were unimportant. On Sunday night, his fangs would be filed down, and theyâd return to DC. James would deal with the aftermath when he was forced to, but for the next thirty-six hours, he planned to indulge in his feelings for Nikolai and his fascination with the Council.
When his shower was finished, James toweled off and dressed casually in chinos and a polo shirt. There were apparently ceremonial clothes for their mating ceremony, and James wasnât sure yet what theyâd wear for the wedding. Perhaps James could convince Nikolai to pop over to his condo and grab a suit. Emerging from the bathroom, James found a vampire in nothing but his boxers, rubbing his eye.
âGood morning,â James said.
Nikolai stretched and yawned. âHello, Darling.â
âIf you donât get dressed, Iâm dragging you back to bed.â
One black brow lifted. âI donât take well to threats.â
âGood for you, letâs get a move on.â
Crossing the space, Nikolai bussed his cheek. âGo eat breakfast. Iâll join you shortly.â
âI hope you have sexier underwear for tonight, although the little fanged bats are cute.â
With a rueful glance at himself, the vampire chuckled. âGrigori gave me these. I find them amusing.â
âShower and change, we have things to do, Nik.â
âI canât decide if Iâm annoyed or pleased by your impatience.â
âSee you at breakfast,â James said, sailing out of the room.
After venturing down the hall, James located the dining area where Irina and Alexei were chatting. They greeted him warmly.
âGood morning,â said James.
He had barely taken a seat when Sebastian strolled in, followed by Grigori and Delaney. The dragon was standing on Grigoriâs shoulder, staring at the food that Tigglesworth and Charlie were bringing in.
âGreggory, you already ate, and Iâm not hosing you off again,â Delaney remarked.
Charlie produced a bag. âI have some cookies for him.â
âEat your breakfast, Love,â Irina told Charlie. âDel and Grigori can feed the bottomless pit.â
âDid someone call for a bottomless pit?â a short blond man asked. His eyes were a deep navy, and he had a plethora of golden ringlets. Behind him was an enormous guy who had to be several inches over six feet.
